| Welcome
Columbus High School, a Liberal Arts
Magnet School, is a 100% college preparatory school. Its liberal
arts education is designed to develop a well-rounded student by offering
a wide range of advanced college preparatory courses in English, mathematics,
social studies, science, foreign language, computers and fine arts.
A liberal arts student does not specialize in any one area; he must take
courses in all domains. He, however, may specialize or focus on an
area of interest by choosing from numerous electives in particular fields.
Due to the high academic standards and expectations required of the Liberal
Arts Magnet, students have produced strong test results on the Georgia
High School Graduation Tests and on SAT Tests. Due to these and other
factors, the Georgia Public Policy Foundation named Columbus High School
as the number two public high school in the state of Georgia (2001-2002).
The MCSD and Columbus High School are very proud of this recognition.
By selecting a liberal arts college preparatory program, we know that each
student in our program is prepared to enter the most competitive universities
and colleges. At CHS a student learns to make decisions and to budget
time by balancing homework, sports, extracurricular activities, and community
service. Students learn that achievement is equivalent to the amount
of effort they put into their work and that self-discipline is the foundation
of success. At Columbus High School "you can have it all!"
Sincerely,
Susan Bryant

Liberal Arts Magnet Application Process
We
encourage application by students who are motivated to learn in a productive
and safe educational environment. Entering freshman qualify for entrance
into the program based on:
-

average in each academic course
-
Successful completion of the entrance
exams (reading comprehension, written expression, algebra prognosis test
or algebra skills test)
-
Recommendations from the counselor, mathematics,
and English teacher
Students must maintain a "C" average in
each course. Magnet students are expected to maintain proper behavior
in all aspects of student life. Students are expected to complete
twenty hours of community service annually, participate in the three required
curriculum-based field trips each year, complete the summer reading requirements,
and during the senior year complete the Senior Project. |
