Elementary School Programs There are five Elementary Magnet Academies within the Muscogee County School District. Each has a unique instructional emphasis. Students must meet eligibility requirements to enroll in any of the magnet academies. To remain in the magnet programs, students must meet expectations of good behavior and academic progress. Each of the Elementary Magnet Academies is designed to provide an enriched learning experience for students in addition to the traditional elementary school curriculum. For more information on entrance requirements and space availability please contact the magnet school staff. Short descriptions of their programs and contact information are provided below. Britt David Computers Unlimited Magnet Academy The Britt David Magnet Program uses technological resources to enhance and reinforce academic studies. Students in kindergarten through fifth grade use computers and other multi-media tools to strengthen skills in reading, math, science, and writing while they develop their creative and thinking skills. Britt David classrooms are completely computer equipped and students use three computer laboratories to supplement their instructional program. Principal: Ms. Veronica Kirkland
Dimon Science, Mathematics and Resource Technology Magnet Academy The Dimon Magnet Program provides kindergarten through fifth grade students with an innovative learning system designed to build upon their natural curiosity for science and mathematics. All traditional elementary school skills, concepts and objectives are presented within a thematic approach to learning. Classrooms contain computers, and a unique elementary math/science laboratory features hands-on investigation of concepts. Principal: Ms. Lura Reed
Downtown Core Knowledge and Computers Magnet Academy This newest elementary school in Columbus features a magnet program based on the Core Knowledge Sequence (What Your Kindergarten-Fifth Grader Needs to Know), a rich, high quality body of content and knowledge. Core knowledge is based on the belief that there is an important "core" of information that all educated people should possess. The core knowledge curriculum emphasizes strong structure and high standards of discipline, as well as citizenship and patriotism. To encourage esprit de corps, pride and loyalty, uniforms will be worn by students at Downtown Magnet Academy. Principal: Mrs. Nancy Housand
Hannan Magnet Academy for Gifted, Resourceful, Enthusiastic, and Talented Students The instructional program at the Hannan Academy is designed to challenge academically gifted and talented students in kindergarten through fifth grades. This comprehensive curriculum seeks to develop higher order thinking skills and offers students foreign language instruction, enhanced reading and language arts programs and extended fine arts instruction. Special features of the facility include a multi-purpose discovery lab, classroom computers, a computer lab, and a closed circuit broadcast studio. Principal: Dr. Ann Robison
St. Marys Video and Communications Technology Magnet Academy The instructional program at St. Marys utilizes creative exploration through the use of high-tech computer and video equipment, while emphasizing math, language arts, social studies and science. All classrooms and two computer labs are completely equipped with advanced video telecommunications and computer technologies, which encourage creativity and higher-order thinking skills.
